스와니시(City of Suwanee)시가 도시 비전과 이를 구현한 성과를 인정받아 ‘2026 비저너리 시티 어워드(Visionary City Award)’ 수상 도시로 선정됐다.
조지아 시정부 협회(GMA)는 조지아 트렌드(Georgia Trend)와 공동으로 스와니시를 올해 비저너리 시티 어워드 수상 도시로 최근 발표했다. 해당 상은 세심한 도시 계획과 강력한 파트너십, 그리고 주민 삶의 질 향상을 위한 노력이 돋보이는 도시 프로젝트를 대상으로 수여된다.
스와니시는 ‘중간 규모 도시(Medium Cities)’ 부문에서 ‘타운 센터 온 메인(Town Center on Main)’ 프로젝트로 선정됐다. 이 프로젝트는 역사적인 올드타운(Old Town)과 기존 타운 센터를 하나의 연결된 보행 친화적 도심으로 통합한 대규모 도시 재생 사업이다. 메인 스트리트(Main Street) 도로 재정비와 지속적인 주민 의견 수렴을 통해 오랜 기간 도시 성장을 가로막아온 물리적 장벽을 제거하고, 새로운 녹지 공간과 보행 연결로, 주민들이 모일 수 있는 공공 공간을 조성했다.
래리 핸슨(Larry Hanson) GMA 최고경영자(CEO) 는 “스와니시의 ‘타운 센터 온 메인’은 의도적인 디자인과 협력이 시민 생활과 도심의 활력을 어떻게 강화할 수 있는지를 잘 보여준다”며 “이 프로젝트는 사람들을 하나로 모으고, 사람 중심의 성장 전략을 추구해 온 수와니시의 도시 철학을 분명히 드러낸다”고 평가했다.
스와니시 지미 버넷(Jimmy Burnette) 시장 역시 “타운 센터 온 메인은 현재 스와니시 시민들의 일상생활 중심지로 자리 잡았으며, 사람들을 연결하는 공간을 만들고자 한 장기적 도시 비전을 반영한다”며 “이번 수상을 매우 영광스럽게 생각하며, 우리 커뮤니티가 이뤄낸 성과를 자랑스럽게 여긴다”고 밝혔다.

Selected in the Medium Cities Category, Suwanee was honored for Town Center on Main, a transformative project that unifies the city’s historic Old Town and Town Center into one connected, walkable downtown. Through the rerouting of Main Street and sustained community input, the project removed long-standing barriers and created new greenspace, pedestrian connections, and gathering spaces.
Larry Hanson, CEO and executive director of GMA, said, “Suwanee’s Town Center on Main shows how intentional design and collaboration can strengthen civic life and downtown vitality. This project brings people together and reinforces the city’s people-centered approach to growth.”
