Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) held a celebration event earlier this week in honor of 20 successful years of quality and performance testing at its California Proving Ground (CPG) in California City, Calif. The $80 million facility, which opened in 2005, has seen more than 5,000 Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis vehicles undergo rigorous testing on a variety of roads and in extreme conditions to ensure their quality, durability, reliability, and safety.
“The Hyundai Motor Group has made exceptional progress over the past 20 years, thanks in part to our California Proving Ground and the outstanding work of our team there,” said Euisun Chung, Executive Chair, Hyundai Motor Group. “As we look to the future, we must focus on pioneering technologies such as AI, robotics, Software Defined Vehicles, electrification, and hydrogen technology. Facilities like the California Proving Ground will be critical to that innovation and will help shape the next 20 years of Hyundai Motor Group, turning challenges into opportunities and setbacks into successes.”
Situated in the middle of the Mojave Desert, the HATCI CPG is a 4,500-acre facility that serves as the center for Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Genesis vehicle evaluation operations in North America. The grounds include a 6.4-mile oval track, 2-million square-foot Vehicle Dynamics Area (VDA), 2.75-mile winding road track, a 3.3-mile hill road, off-road evaluation loops, and various specially surfaced roads exactingly constructed to replicate U.S. highways.
Team members at the facility perform full vehicle evaluation, durability, and development testing. Vehicle development operations include activities ranging from ride and handling evaluations to Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) tests and Heat Protection assessments. The CPG also features three fully equipped garages and a material-weathering facility to accelerate and assess UV degradation.
The CPG is one of many HATCI facilities in the United States dedicated to design, technology and engineering of Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) vehicles. HATCI supports new model development for HMG’s North American operations and global programs from dedicated engineering facilities and support staff at affiliate sites located throughout the United States, including:
- HATCI HQ (Superior Township, MI) – 220,000-square-foot state-of-the-art engineering and technology center
- Chino Lab (Chino, CA) – specialized research facility focused on powertrain performance tuning, with a special emphasis on eco vehicle applications.
- Hyundai America Design & Engineering Center (Irvine, CA) – 90,000 square-foot, design and technical center fitted with the world’s most advanced visualization, graphics and clay modeling technologies.
- North America Quality Center – NAQC (Chino, CA) – center dedicated to quality activities spanning from early prototype, benchmarking activities and pre-production durability.
- CRADLE (Silicon Valley, CA) – home to acceleration programs and next-generation technologies including mobility, electrification, connectivity, and robotics.

현대자동차∙기아의 품질 경영을 상징하는 미국 캘리포니아 주행시험장(California Proving Ground, 이하 모하비주행시험장)이 설립 20주년을 맞았다.
현대자동차∙기아는 10일 미국 캘리포니아 캘리포니아시티에 위치한 모하비주행시험장에서 설립 20주년 기념행사를 열고, 완벽한 품질과 성능 확보를 위해 노력해온 연구원들을 치하하는 자리를 마련했다.
이날 행사에는 정의선 현대자동차그룹 회장을 비롯해 장재훈 완성차 담당 부회장, 호세 무뇨스 현대자동차 CEO, 양희원 사장(R&D 본부장) 등이 참석해 임직원들과 모하비주행시험장의 지난 역사를 돌아보고 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 소통하는 시간을 가졌다.
이 자리에서 정의선 회장은 “현대자동차그룹은 지난 20년 동안 모하비주행시험장과 연구원들의 헌신적인 노력 덕분에 의미 있는 진전을 이룰 수 있었다”며 “우리는 미래를 내다보면서 AI, 로봇 공학, SDV, 전동화, 수소 기술과 같은 선구적인 기술에 집중해야 하고 이러한 혁신을 위해 모하비주행시험장과 같은 연구시설이 핵심적인 역할을 하게 될 것”이라고 말했다.
이어 정의선 회장은 현지 연구원들에게 “앞으로 다가올 20년의 여정에서도 도전을 기회로, 좌절을 성공으로 전환시키는 사명을 달성하기 위해 지속 노력해 달라”고 당부했다.
행사에 참석한 모하비주행시험장 임직원들 또한 최고의 안전과 품질, 성능을 제공하겠다는 고객과의 약속을 재확인하며 더욱 빈틈없는 담금질에 대한 의지를 다졌다.
지난 2005년 현대자동차∙기아는 모하비 사막 한 가운데 약 1,200억 원을 투자해 여의도 면적의 두 배에 달하는 1,770만㎡(약 535만 평) 규모의 모하비주행시험장을 건립했다.
이 주행시험장은 ▲10.3km의 타원형 고속주회로와 ▲6개 기울기로 구성된 등판성능 시험로 ▲5km의 와인딩트랙 ▲18종류 노면의 승차감 시험로 ▲오프로드 시험로 ▲미국 고속도로 재현 시험로 등으로 구성돼 있다.
현대자동차∙기아는 이곳에서 승차감과 핸들링 평가부터 소음, 진동 및 내구 테스트를 진행하고 있으며, 여름철이면 54℃를 넘나드는 기후를 활용해 차량과 부품의 열 내구성 평가나 냉각 성능을 시험하는 등 차량의 품질을 다각도로 검증한다.
모하비주행시험장에서는 지금까지 5천여 대의 현대자동차, 기아, 제네시스 차량이 약 3천2백만Km 이상의 혹독한 주행 시험을 거쳤으며, 이를 통해 최고 수준의 품질과 내구성, 신뢰성, 안전성을 갖추는 데 핵심적인 역할을 했다.
이곳에서 가혹한 테스트와 실도로 조건 이상의 담금질을 통해 완성된 현대자동차∙기아 신차들은 시장의 긍정적 평가를 이끄는 동시에 소비자들의 시선을 사로잡기 시작했다. 한 단계 향상된 상품, 품질 덕분에 현대자동차∙기아는 지난 2010년 글로벌 톱 5를 기록한 이후 12년 만인 2022년 처음으로 세계 판매 3위에 올랐으며, 지난해까지 3년 연속 3위 자리를 지키고 있다.
한편 현대자동차∙기아는 북미시장에 최적화된 모빌리티 제공을 위해 제품 기획부터 디자인, 설계, 시험에 이르는 R&D 현지화 체계를 구축했다.
1986년 미시간주에 미국기술연구소(HATCI, Hyundai America Technical Centre, Inc) 설립을 시작으로 캘리포니아주에는 파워트레인 전문 연구시설인 ‘치노 랩’과 ‘모하비주행시험장’, ‘디자인&엔지니어링 센터’, ‘북미품질센터’ 등을 운영하고 있으며, 실리콘 밸리에는 차세대 기술 연구시설이자 혁신 거점인 ‘크래들(CRADLE)’도 운영하고 있다.
